Ingram was born in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., into a family of six children. Her mother worked at childcare while her stepfather worked in city operations. When she was 10 years old, she was enrolled by her mother and a teacher at Windsor Hills Elementary in an after-school theater program.

Ingram later attended Baltimore School for the Arts, where she graduated in 2012. She declined an offer to attend Howard University due to financial limitations but enrolled in Baltimore City Community College in 2012. Baltimore City did not have a drama program but she was encouraged by her advisor to continue acting and audition for local plays. She also took on multiple part-time jobs and scholarships to fund her schooling. She later graduated with an associate degree.

In 2015, Ingram won a regional competition from the National Society of Arts and Letters, and in the nationals, she finished fourth. Jonathan Majors, the winner of that competition, encouraged her to audition for the Yale School of Drama. She did as was advised and was accepted with scholarship support and enrolled in the fall of 2016. In 2018, she received a Princess Grace Award and in June 2019, she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts.
