Matten was born in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a descendant of Red River Metis-Cree and is directly a descendant of Cuthbert Grant, the first rebel Metis leader famously known for the Battle of the Seven Oaks in Canada. She attended the University of Alberta, where she graduated with a science degree in Human Ecology.
Matten was the creator and founder of the first and only Indigenous Cree Wellness and Fitness magazine “Active Cree” distributed monthly to 60,000 people and 10 communities across the James Bay area throughout Northern Ontario. She is also a guest speaker across North America, Asia, and Europe promoting and spreading awareness on Indigenous issues. She started the N8V Girls social media campaign and website to raise awareness of the murdered and missing indigenous peoples in Canada.

Matten made her first film appearance in 2010, playing the role of ‘Woman’ in the short film, Pigs. She starred as Jason Momoa in Season 3 of Discovery Canada & Netflix’s TV show “Frontier (2016-2018)”. From 2018 to 2019, she starred in the CW Network and CBC drama, “Burden of Truth. In 2020, she starred in the comic adaptation movie, “The Empty Man”, for Disney/20th Century Fox studios.
