Gao was born on August 15, 1982, in Tianjin, China. Before he turned 15 years old, he was a footballer. He later made a crossover from sports to entertainment. He is a graduate of Shanghai Theatre Academy.
Gao alongside Chinese producer, Wang Jing, was arrested in Sydney, Australia, on March 29, 2018. He was in Sydney to shoot the TV series, Love In Aranya and there a woman accused him and Wang Jing of sexually assaulting her three days before in the Shangri-La Hotel, which led to the arrest. He was released on bail of $3 million in June of that same year.
