Charlie Rose was born on January 5, 1942, in Henderson, North Carolina, USA. He was the only child of Charles Sr and Margaret who were tobacco farmers. Charlie attended Henderson High School and upon completing his high school, he furthered his education by attending Duke University. His plan was to study for a pre-med degree, however, he had a change of mind after his internship at the office of Senator B. Everett Jordan.
In 1964, he graduated with a BA in history, and he earned a J.D in 1968 from the Duke University School of Law and it was here that he met his ex-wife.

Charlie started his career as a freelancer for BBC while also working at New York Bankers Trust and it was during his stint at the New York Bankers Trust that he landed a job as a weekend reporter for WPIX-TV. His breakthrough came in 1974 after he was hired as a managing director for the PBS Series Bill Moyers International Report. His interview with Jimmy Carter won him the Peabody Award in 1976 and also worked with other top broadcasting channels including KXAS-TV where he normally aired his program The Charlie Rose Show.
